My trip to Mexico in 2001 provided a wonderful opportunity for me
to start painting with watercolors. Although I had done watercolor painting in elementary and middle school art classes, my
teachers never taught us about the different types of paper, the difference between transparent and opaque, and techniques
such as wet-on-wet, wash, lift, and so on. After coming back from Mexico I read as much as I could about watercolor
and I realized that I actually knew nothing about it. I had painted extensively in oils during high school and college, but
watercolor is quite different. Some artists are good at controlling water and pigment, and others are good at letting water
run freely on the paper. I still have a lot to learn.
I have spent little time painting in the past 15 years. There
has always been something more interesting to do than paint. Now I feel as though it is time to pursue painting again - I
do not want to waste another 15 years!
